If someone asked if anybody had forgotten to pack something on a trip, I would be the first person to raise my hand. It’s hard to remember everything that you might need. I have been on many overnight trips, mostly to my grandparents’ house, so I think I’d know a thing or two about packing. It’s difficult to remember everything, but I’m going to try to help you through it.
This is key. It could be on your phone or on a piece of paper. It may also help if you start your list a day before or while you’re bored at work. Whatever way you do it, you need to do it. If you don’t make a list of what to bring, it’s easier to forget it. After you make your list, you want to keep referring back to it while you’re packing to make sure you checked everything off. This isn’t a “write-it-down-so-we-can-memorize-it thing. After you’re done packing, check your list again then pack it. That way, you can look at it again when you’re repacking to go back home.
This isn’t necessary, but it helps you to see how much stuff you’re bringing. That way, you know what size suitcase you need. Don’t bring anything you don’t need, unless there’s a little extra room 😉. While all your stuff is laid out, you can easily pick out something that you don’t need to put it away instead of digging through your suitcase.
This is super obvious. I just wanted to make sure that you were clear. There’s no robot that comes in and packs everything for you. You actually have to pack your own belongings.
Mom Note: If you have children and they’re restless while you’re trying to pack their stuff, you can play a game of “I Spy” to help them pack. (ex: I spy a blue shirt that has stars on it. Then they have to find the shirt) They’ll learn how to pack and it will be fun.
Disclaimer: I’m not a mom, but I work with children all the time. I know it’s different, so you can take my advice as you will. I’m just throwing a suggestion out there. (:
Personally, it depends on where I’m going and how long I’m staying for this step. If I’m staying for longer than a few days and there’s a lot of room for me to unpack, then I’ll then unpack everything. Sometimes, I’ll just leave everything in my suitcase, so when the time comes to go home, I will already be packed. It just depends on your personal preference.
Extra Packing Tips
- I like to bring an extra plastic bag for dirty laundry. That way, when I get home, I can just dump that bag in the hamper (or washer if there’s enough).
- I make my bed and clean my room before I leave so I can come home to a welcoming environment.
- It’s better to only bring what you need so you don’t have to remember so much. Although, I’ll be honest. I don’t always pack lightly…
