Autumn is Here
I can not tell you how excited I am for autumn to finally be here. Right now, the weather is still warm. Hopefully, that will change soon. I get excited very easily and new seasons are something I always get excited about. My favorite part about autumn is the variation of activities that people participate in during this wonderful time of year. There’s so many, I decided to make a list for you. My goal is to do all of them to some extent.
This is the most obvious thing you could do. If you don’t go pumpkin picking, do you even like autumn? There are so many things that you can do with a pumpkin. You use every bit of it so it’s not a waste in the slightest. Sure, the actual picking of the pumpkins is a little more expensive than just buying one at a local market, but you pay for the experience as well. Personally, I think it’s worth it.
Find Your Way out of a Corn Maze
I feel that often times there will be a corn maze at a pumpkin patch or a festival of some sort. Regardless, they are a lot of fun with a buddy. If you’re actually lost in a corn maze by yourself, I could see how that could be a little overwhelming. However, if you’re lost with a friend in a corn maze, it’s a bit more fun.
Carve a pumpkin
Once you get your pumpkin (and get out of that corn maze), you can empty it out and carve it! Last year, my sister and I did it together. I made a minion pumpkin and she made a big face. People are starting to get really creative with it! I’ve seen people just paint them so they can avoid the mess. It looks really pretty but if you do that, you can’t do the next thing which is…
Roast pumpkin seeds
My friend (now roommate) introduced me to this because my family didn’t really ever do this when I was growing up. Roasted pumpkin seeds are really delicious though! You just put them in a pan with some oil and salt and voila! They’re golden and delicious and they make for a great snack during this wonderful season.
I don’t know if it’s as common to do this in other areas of the world as it is in central Virginia, but it is a HUGE ordeal here. There’s a place that puts on a little festival at the beginning of October. You can buy pumpkins there too, but they’re already picked. The picture on the right is when I went with my family quite some time ago. It really is a lot of fun for everyone!
Homemade Apple Pie
Once you come back from apple picking, you can make a delicious pie out of them! I have never made a pie before, but I think this is going to be the year. Also, I don’t particularly like pie. However, I do enjoy making things and my family likes pie, so I’ll just give it to them. If you have any tips for me I would love to hear them!
Eat Caramel Apples
Whoever discovered putting caramel on apples was a genius. I don’t know who it was, but it was probably their best idea yet. At the grocery store the other day I saw some and I really wanted them, but I didn’t get any. I haven’t had them in such a long time This year, that is going to change!
Make Apple Cider
Another thing you can make with your apples is fresh apple cider! This is one thing that I’ll probably cheat on. Making homemade apple cider from scratch is a LOT of work. My mom usually buys the stuff in a carton at the store and heats it in a crock pot with some additional flavors to make it look homemade. I think that’s the direction I’m heading. I will make it this year because it is delicious!
What’s autumn without a bonfire? Roasting marshmallows and hot dogs in the fire is such a great experience. Doing it with a group of friends or family is even better. It’s a great place for people to come together! I suppose this is also a summer activity, but it’s cozier in the fall.
Night in with Autumn Candles
I just love candles in general and autumn is all about flavors and smells. There are so many autumnal candles to choose from! My favorite is like a cider-y smell or cinnamon. You could also watch a movie or take a bath while enjoying the candles and their scent. Or you could do all three at the same time! If you’re looking for a way to relax, candles should be involved.
Make a Leaf Pile
This one will bring out your inner child. Of course making a leaf pile wouldn’t be as fun without jumping in it. If you’re freaked out about the dirt or the bugs that could be in the pile, you could just make a cool craft with them instead. Deer Pearl Flowers has one on their blog that uses leaves to make a candle holder as well as some other fun autumnal crafts. It looks really fun!
Bring on the Autumn Lip Color!
I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love whenever my lips have a pop of color. Most of the colors that I like are more autumnal. The other day, I wore a really dark purple that I haven’t worn before but was really excited about. My sister and my mom were taken aback by it, but I think they got used to it. I like it and it’s just the another reason I’m excited about autumn.
Drink Something Pumpkin Spice Related
I don’t know how “basic” you want to get. However, I really like pumpkin spice things. I don’t like coffee, so I won’t get a latte, but I got a frappuccino without coffee and it’s just as magical. I know a lot of people are done with the whole “I’m-gonna-do-what-everyone-else-is-doing” thing, but you should try a pumpkin spice something anyway.
Make Pumpkin Spice Cake
You can also make a pumpkin spice cake! I want to try this. Maybe I just love pumpkin spice, but is that really so wrong? It is autumn for goodness sake! My sister just made pumpkin spice muffins the other night and they were so delicious (those are the muffins in the other picture with the gingerbread cake down below).
The fashion that comes with autumn is really great. Like I said earlier, the weather is still warm. That sucks because I’m ready to wear scarves and boots. There are so many great fashion trends and warm colors that are part of the autumnal experience. The picture on the right is a photo of myself last year with my favorite scarf and long hair. I don’t miss it like I thought I would.
Shop for Autumnal Home Goods
There is nothing I love more than shopping for home goods. My wallet doesn’t really like it, but what do I make money for… paying bills?! I just love cute and unique things that are used to decorate. I used to collect little knick-knacks when I was a kid because it’s just fun! I’ve always loved that kind of stuff.
Decorate your House
After getting all that shopping, you can start decorating your house! I love decorating. I don’t decorate enough because I just have my bedroom and then everything else is shared space. Because I don’t want to be a bother, I try not to go too crazy. So I only decorate for birthdays and we’re going to decorate for Christmas of course. You better believe that when I’m in my own space, I will be decorating every month!
Take Pictures of the Foliage
Just close your eyes for a second, or look out your window if applicable, and picture the beautiful scenery. You could also just look at this beautiful photo at the beginning of this post! Now, if you go explore a park, or another place that you like, and take photos of the view you can’t go wrong. It’s beautiful and you might find something new on your exploration! Maybe you could even take some selfies while you’re there.
Throw a Halloween Party
This is an exciting holiday that happens during autumn. My favorite part of Halloween is dressing up. There are so many fun costumes! And it’s fun to make your own costume. I dressed up as Minnie Mouse last year by using black leggings and a red dress and I have a giraffe onesie that I wore 2 years ago because it was warm and comfy. I think I might try for a tiger or deer this year.
Go to a Fall Festival
Fall festivals are so fun! They happen around the same time as Halloween. I always go with the children that I work with because it is usually geared towards kids. If you have children or are babysitting, going to a fall festival is just a lot of fun. I’m actually helping out with a fall festival with my church and I’m going to a different one with the kids I work with and we get to dress up. That’s probably my favorite part of fall festivals too.
Spend a Night Looking at the Stars
This is a great activity to do with the bonfire ablaze. You could even camp outdoors, but if it is cold I wouldn’t. I camped with my friend for a weekend in November a couple years ago and that was brutal. If you just look at the stars for a little bit with a cozy blanket, it’ll be nice.
Try a New Autumnal Dessert
I made the most delicious gingerbread cake the other day for my mom’s birthday party and it was so good! It had cream cheese icing and it was great. I’m planning another post on that soon, so keep an eye out! The really boring looking one on the left is the one I made. I was so bummed I didn’t have enough time to make it look pretty. It sure did taste good though! There are certainly endless possibilities for autumnal desserts, but I would suggest something pumpkin, apple, or gingerbread.
If for some reason, you don’t want to make s’mores in the fire like normal people (or you don’t have access to a fire) you could just make them in the microwave or over a gas stove light. They’re so yummy and so easy to make. Also, if you have kids or are around kids often, you could make them with them. Everyone loves s’mores!
Go on a scenic walk with a warm drink
A lot of the time, you’ll be with people that you love in autumn. You can do this with your friends and family members, but this would also be a great thing to do by yourself if you need to get away from a family gathering or you’re just by yourself already, it would be nice to enjoy the scenery around the neighborhood
Alright! Well, that’s 25 fun activities for autumn! I hope you enjoyed all this! If you try one, a bunch, or all of them, let me know! You can tag me in your pictures on Instagram or tweet me. I’m really excited about autumn and I love seeing other people’s adventures and autumnal photos. I hope you have a wonderful day!
